What is a pocket spring mattress?

As a great evolution for traditional spring mattresses, pocket spring mattresses appear. In this type of mattress, the springs are individually bagged and sewn one by one, which generates greater comfort and stability, adapting perfectly to the body.

These guarantee good firmness, provide greater comfort in your rest and stand out for their great resistance to the passage of time. In these mattresses, the movement does not propagate. So if you sleep together and your partner moves on the other side of the bed, you won't feel the mattress sway.

Inside the pocket spring mattresses there are those made of Visco SSI. The self-forming visco-elastic layer adapts perfectly to the body, leveling the weight and distributing it along the surface, particularly in the lower back and shoulders. Thus, they offer extra comfort, independent and adaptable.

How does the pocket spring mechanism work?

One pocket spring mattress is, as the name implies, made of individually bagged springs, that is, each spring is contained in its own fabric pocket. Since they are in individual bags, each spring works independently of each other, reacting only to pressure applied to that area.

Unlike traditional spring mattresses, pocket springs do not move as a whole unit. Thus, each spring works individually to properly support your body and reduces the transfer of motion to other areas of the mattress. This results in a higher level of personalized support and response for each person sleeping on the mattress.

The firmness and homogeneity of this system maintains excellent independence of the beds.

Is the pocket spring mattress suitable for everyone?

Each person has a more suitable mattress. It all depends on your rest needs and your profile.

Due to the mechanics already explained, pocket spring mattresses are particularly suitable for those who tend to move a lot during the night and/or for those who sleep with a person of different weight next to them. Thus, a couple that sleeps together does not feel each other's movements.

What types of springs are there?

A spring mattress is undoubtedly an excellent option for those looking for an option that combines comfort and durability.

However, at the time of choosing the ideal mattress you may come across the existence of several types of springs. At Colmol, we work with:

  • Pocket Springs
  • SSW Springs (Bonnel)
  • SPA Springs

The pocket spring system is the best known. Because they are bagged and sewn one by one (individually), they allow a better adaptation to the curves of the body and provide greater comfort to your rest.

The homogeneity of this system maintains an excellent independence of the beds. This is because each spring is placed in an individual bag which, together with the net, forms a solid core in the mattress.

Firmer and more traditional, the SSW Spring - also known as the Bonnell Spring - was used a lot in the past. The dynamic and progressive suspension of this system is adapted to active and corpulent people, who frequently change their position during sleep.

This type of springs are known mainly for their flexibility, firmness and for having a good cost-benefit ratio.

Finally, the SPA Spring is like an upgrade to the SSW Spring. It is a system made up of even more springs, which reinforce the support provided by these mattresses and provide greater support to the spine.

Bonnel Springs vs Bagged Springs: which is the best option?

The answer to this question is: it depends! Both options guarantee great nights of comfort.

However, the choice of spring type is directly related to the needs of each person, taking into account whether they sleep alone or with a partner. This is undoubtedly the game changer when deciding between the two spring variants.

Pocket springs move independently and provide more support for your body. They are ideal for those who sleep with someone whose weight is different, so they don't feel each other's movements during the night.

On the other side, bonnel springs are all directly connected to each other and move together. This means that, if you sleep with someone, you will certainly feel the other person's movements during the night, which can become quite uncomfortable and interfere with the quantity and quality of your sleep.

So, what will make you decide between one or the other option is the way your nights are spent.

If you usually sleep alone, a bonnel spring mattress can be a good choice. But, if you do it with a partner, it might be better to opt for a mattress with pocket springs. You'll get more comfort and support!

In resume:

  • Bonnel Springs: perfect for singles
  • Pocket Springs: perfect for couples

Which is better: the pocket spring mattress or the foam mattress?

There is no mattress better than another, there are mattresses that are more suitable for each person.

By design, spring mattresses facilitate the flow of air inside and are generally cooler at night compared to foam mattresses.

That said, in recent years many foams now include cooling gels and an open structure to help regulate body temperature. Both types offer independence of movement and good support.

Taking into account the durability factor, foam mattresses last much less than pocket spring mattresses. This is because, with time of use, the foam begins to deform, which results in poor nights sleep and body aches.

With pocket spring mattresses this does not happen. They are more resistant mattresses that adapt to our body more evenly, taking longer to deform and, therefore, last longer!

A foam mattress lasts an average of 2 to 3 years, while a spring mattress can last from 5 (bonnel springs) to 10 years (bagged springs).

Even so, any of the options can gain more useful life if all the cleaning and hygiene care of the mattress is taken into account, such as roll it/turn it frequently, proper protection, etc.

The best option for your column!

This is a very frequent question: but, after all, what is the best mattress for the spine? Springs or Foam?

One thing's for sure: if you wake up without feeling like you've had enough rest during the night, you probably don't have the mattress best suited to your sleeping position.

A good mattress, which ensures that we have the spine correctly positioned while we sleep, is essential to obtain quality of life and avoid developing serious problems later on.

The choice of best mattress for your spine it always depends on the care your body needs. Thus, a mattress with greater resistance, such as a pocket spring mattress, is good for those who suffer from back pain… or want to avoid suffering.

If you usually wake up with back pain, we recommend that you adopt some types of practices that, together with the right mattress, can alleviate this problem. try it stretch the muscles of the back before going to sleep and/or using techniques of meditation and relaxation to help release muscle tension.

It will make a big difference in the way you sleep, but also how you wake up!

Pocket spring mattress: the advantages

  1. No motion transfer

Unlike other types of mattresses where the body's weight is distributed across the surface, each pocket spring reacts independently, which promotes a good night's sleep.

  1. Pressure and pain relief

Not too hard, not too soft: each spring in these mattresses works individually to support your entire body, providing the right pressure on individual areas such as your hips and shoulders. Thus, mattresses are often recommended for orthopedic patients with hip and shoulder problems.

  1. Very comfortable – luxury feel

They are high quality and equipped with a luxurious foam top layer, which makes the pocket spring mattress soft to the touch and even more comfortable to sleep on.

  1. Support for everyone

Due to the individual housings of each spring, pocket spring mattresses adjust and offer comfort for a good night's sleep, even if two people of very different sizes and weights sleep on the same mattress.

  1. Durable

With proper care and maintenance, it won't be a surprise if your pocket spring mattress will last at least a decade, if not longer!

  1. Do not heat

By design, the springs inside the mattress are more efficient at letting air circulate inside, creating a cooler mattress.

What are the disadvantages of spring mattresses?

The truth is that there are practically no disadvantages with pocket spring mattresses. And that is also why these are an excellent option for those who intend to invest in a new mattress.

The only drawback may be the price factor, since pocket spring mattresses have a higher cost compared to other types of mattresses.

However, this cannot be considered a disadvantage, since we are talking about a super complete type of mattress, which guarantees maximum comfort and durability! And that also pays off… right?

On the other hand, mattresses with more accessible types of springs (such as bonnel spring mattresses) have a greater number of disadvantages, especially with regard to the sensitivity of movements and the noise they can cause.
