Um estudo da COLMOL: Como dormem os portugueses?

A study by COLMOL: How do the Portuguese sleep?

Index

Sleep. Such a simple activity, yet essential for our physical and mental well-being. It is during sleep that our body recovers, memories are consolidated, and our energy is renewed to face a new day.

We all know how a good night's sleep is essential to face the day with energy and willingness. But are we really paying proper attention to our rest?

COLMOL conducted a study on the sleep habits of the Portuguese, and the results are surprising!

Over five years, more than 3500 Portuguese participated in this study through a quiz available on our website. With a participant distribution by gender of 1279 men and 2299 women, we managed to obtain insights significant insights about sleep patterns in Portugal and the main sleep preferences/needs of the Portuguese

After all, who better to tell us how the Portuguese sleep than the Portuguese themselves? Let's get to the conclusions!

The results

Knowledge about mattresses

One of the most curious (and at the same time, surprising!) conclusions of our study is that only 1 in 10 Portuguese claims to be well informed about which type of mattress best suits their sleep.

This data is somewhat worrying, since choosing the right mattress is essential to ensure restorative rest. A mattress that does not provide adequate support can result in back pain, discomfort and sleepless nights.

Tip: Take time to research and understand the different mattress options available, considering factors such as firmness, materials, and support. At COLMOL, we are always available to help you find the best option for your individual needs!

Aging of mattresses

Surprisingly, 4 out of 10 Portuguese, still sleep on mattresses over 10 years old!

Although it may seem harmless to keep the same mattress for years on end, the truth is that mattresses have a limited lifespan and, over time, lose their support and comfort properties. Investing in a new mattress can make all the difference in sleep quality and long-term health.

Tip: If your mattress is already showing signs of wear, such as sagging or deformities, and is starting to cause discomfort in your body, it's time to change the mattress

The preference for coziness

Another interesting aspect that emerged in our study concerns sleeping positions. Half of the Portuguese participants revealed that prefer to sleep wrapped in the mattress, seeking a feeling of security and comfort during the night.

However, although this is a position that provides a pleasant feeling of relaxation, many specialists recommend sleeping on your side. This position helps align the spine, reducing pressure on the back and neck, as well as facilitating breathing and digestion.

Tip: Still, if you are a fan of the feeling of sleeping wrapped in your mattress, choose models that ensure a perfect spine alignment and precise support.

The battle against physical pain

Physical pain is a major obstacle to a good night's sleep, as confirmed by 8 out of 10 participants from our study. Back, shoulder, and neck pain can make it difficult to find a comfortable sleeping position, resulting in restless nights and frequent awakenings.

By cross-referencing this data with the age and weight of the Portuguese, we conclude that the older and heavier the person, the higher the incidence of pain and discomfort during sleep. Aging and excess weight are often associated with chronic health conditions, such as joint pain, back pain, and blood circulation problems.

Tip: If you suffer from pain during sleep, it is important to invest in a mattress that offers proper support. Mattresses with firmness medium to firm are generally more suitable for people with back pain, as they help keep the spine aligned during sleep. Also, consider using pillows ergonomic to provide additional support to the head and neck.

Quality vs Price: The Consumer's Dilemma

Finally, we asked the Portuguese how much they are willing to pay for an optimal night's sleep.

We found that half of participants are willing to invest in a quality mattress, even if it means paying a little more.

Most participants in our study expressed a preference for quality over price, recognizing the importance of a good mattress to ensure a good night's sleep.

Tip: When choosing a mattress, remember that you are investing in your long-term health and well-being. Prioritize quality and proper support, even if it means spending a little more initially. A quality mattress can last for years and years, providing countless health benefits!

What do we conclude?

The results of our study reveal that there is still much to learn about how we sleep and how we choose our mattresses.

First of all, it became clear that there is a widespread lack of knowledge among the Portuguese about mattress types and how to choose the one that best suits each person. This aspect highlights the importance of education and awareness about the importance of the mattress for sleep quality and overall health.

We can also conclude that there is a high prevalence of worn mattresses among participants, indicating the need to raise awareness about regular mattress replacement. Additionally, the relationship between age, weight, and physical pain was also a significant finding, highlighting the importance of considering these factors when choosing a mattress.

However, despite the identified challenges, there are also reasons for optimism! Thanks to all the conclusions drawn, we can direct our efforts to develop more effective and personalized solutions to improve the sleep and well-being of the Portuguese. We will continue to invest resources and energy in research and education about sleep habits and the importance of a quality mattress for a healthy life.
